Vehicles must be inspected every six months.
Federal DOT (Interstate)
Vehicles must be inspected every year.

Q. Do I need an annual vehicle safety inspection or a six-month inspection?
A. If you have a Federal DOT number, you need an annual inspection. If you do not have a Federal DOT number, Illinois DOT requires an inspection every six months.
Q. Which vehicles are required to be inspected?
A. Every truck rated for a gross weight 8,000 pounds and over. Every trailer rated for a gross weight 5,000 pounds and over.

A. Proof of ownership and vehicle registration card.
